How to Verify That your Opener Is Still Plugged in?

Troubleshooting Tips from the Pros at Dulle Overhead Doors

If your garage door suddenly stops working, it’s easy to assume the worst—broken springs, a faulty opener, or expensive repairs. But before you call in a pro, start with one of the simplest fixes: make sure your garage door opener is still plugged in.

It might sound basic, but you’d be surprised how often this is the issue especially after a power outage, storm, or when outlets accidentally get unplugged while moving things around in the garage.

Where to Look: Finding the Power Source

Your garage door opener is typically plugged into a ceiling-mounted outlet near the center of your garage. Here’s how to check:

  1. Grab a step ladder and locate the outlet above your garage door motor.

  2. Make sure the power cord is fully plugged in—not loose or halfway out.

  3. If it looks connected, gently unplug and plug it back in to reset the power flow.

  4. Check the outlet itself by plugging in a different device (like a phone charger or power tool) to see if the outlet is live.

If the outlet has no power, you might be dealing with a tripped breaker or blown fuse—common after a surge or lightning storm.

Still Not Working? It Might Be a GFCI Issue

  • Garage outlets are often connected to a GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlet somewhere else in the garage—or even inside the house. If that outlet trips, it cuts power to everything on the line, including your opener.

    Here’s what to do:

    • Look for outlets with “Reset” and “Test” buttons, usually found near the workbench or utility wall.

    • Press the “Reset” button to restore power.

    • Go back to your opener and test the remote or wall button.

    If it works problem solved!

When to Call the Experts

If you’ve confirmed the opener is plugged in and the outlet has power, but your garage door still won’t respond, it’s time to call in the pros. You could be dealing with:

  • A burnt-out opener motor

  • A damaged circuit board

  • A faulty wall button or remote signal

  • Internal wiring issues
